I am so sorry to have heard of your death albeit several years later. You were always a good friend and we used to have many laughs together. We all went our separate ways in life, but you I thought would out live all of us. I'll always remember you my friend.

I met Luke in Fort Lauderdale in the early 80's. He has sat at my parents' table many times and vacationed with our family in the keys. I know he and my Dad are still telling fishing tales but in a better place. I am sorry I did not know of Lukes passing until today. I have not talked to him in 4-5 years. The man had a smile that made you forgive whatever antics he just got caught doing. My children loved him and so did both of my husbands. I met him through my sister and we adopted him into the family. I am so sorry for your loss.

Wow, I was saddened to come across this today. I knew Luke back over 30 years ago, he was such a sweet guy and a good friend of my brother's who has also passed over. Somewhere in the sky I hope they've met up and had some laughs, as laughter seemed to be a common denominator with anyone who knew Luke. My heartfelt condolences to all of his family. I know you know what a great guy he was.

I am so sorry to hear of Joseph's passing. We briefly played together in a band quickly put together to play at my sister Susan's grade 9 graduation. Joey was a great drummer, and as nice a person as I've ever met. He had a great sense of humor and he loved life.
He will definitely be missed by everyone who knew him. I wish you all strength at this very sad time.

Remember Luke at your place looking for help to feet smash grapes for his homemade wine with my pal "Hoop" way back when, having stick battles out in front of the "Moon" on Kempt. I think I first met him as a kid on my street with his Pa laying concrete at my Godfathers. Sorry I missed ya last summer at the Haven, May that Spirit Live on! Neil Naugle

My deepest sympathies to all of the Smithers family. Though I only knew "Luke" for about 7 years I can honestly say I've never met someone with a more kind and caring heart. A man of many talents. When time allows please listen to "He ain't Heavy- He's my Brother" by the Hollies. After listening to the words over and over I came to realize just who was doing the lifting. Luke was truly a fisher of men. See you soon Brother.

Dear Smithers family,
I am so sorry for your loss. May you be comforted in knowing that God knows your pain for he himself lost his dear son once as he looked on. He promises that our loved ones will live again just as he resurrected his son. (Acts 2:24) That hope will become a reality one day soon. Job 14:14,15

Deeply saddened by the news of Joe's passing. Although, it's been more than forty years since our High School days, then when our journey lead us on separate paths; the time we shared was special & a little piece of my heart has always belonged to him. 💞

I remember when, Joe decided not to finish High School & he went to work in the concrete business with his Dad (Fred); I'm so glad to learn that it worked out & that Joe found something he loved to do & that he was good at it; & how proud he was when he bought his first new car (a red Vega) - hot wheels ... so comforting to know that along his journey he found peace & got to experience the love of his children, family & friends. Sincere condolences to everyone who loved him. Rest in peace Joe.

To Lucks Families all over.

I was blessed the day that I had the opportunity to meet Luck twice in the short time that he visited Halifax from Indianapolis. Both times were ever so memorable. The Second time we met I met his very own son who worked with him. A wonderful young man and a respectful young gentleman. Seeing Luke's smile coming toward me to shake my hand for the first time was as broad as the stash that he is wearing in his photo within this Obituary announcement. We were not close friends but I can say that I never had a lifelong friend of mine that left and everlasting wonderful expression in my mind nor in my heart as Luke did. I knew from the second, not a minuet that I met him that he was genuinely a gentleman, rough, tough, and well worked. His callus hands showed me that he was the one I wanted to do my driveway. Unfortunately before it could happen he had his heart issues while in Halifax.

The next time I met him which was his second visit to my home to confirm the work I wanted him to do for me. That's when we spend a good part of 3-4 hours laughing and becoming closer as I felt that he was a friend and not just a contractor that was looking to do a good Job for me. He said to me, "Give me the chance to do your driveway and after its finished, you will be the envy of every home owner in Dartmouth." I trusted in him and we went through with the contract. Right now I wish that Luke was here in my home having another afternoon laugh and chat together with Peter, his friend and co partner in Crime here in the Concrete business. Peter lost one of the best as I see in Peter's FaceBook that he has lost his Friend and TEACHER, you as his family have lost a tremendous son, father, uncle, grandfather and friend to all. I am so happy to read that he truly was a believer in Christ and that I hope that he found him in his heart when he was preparing to be in a higher place. I feel better knowing this. God be with you Luke, A friend... Gerald Sullivan

Please accept my sympathy for your loss in “Luke’s” passing. He was my backdoor neighbor for several years and I will miss knowing he was just “there”. Although there were not many opportunities for us to chat, Luke appeared to be a kind-hearted and gentle man, certainly an unobtrusive neighbor and a hard worker. We shared a love of dogs and I am grateful to learn that “Dude” is in a family home, surely loved and well cared for.

I pray that Luke is at peace with “Dozer” resting by his side.
