Vernice Louise (Mearling) Gish

Vernice Gish, New Palestine - 88, passed away January 17.  She was born in Sugar Creek Township on June 9, 1936, to the late August Christopher and Orpha (Miller) Mearling and was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church.  Vernice was a 1954 graduate of New Palestine High School.  She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she married Bart in 1957. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage until his passing in 2019. Vernice enjoyed teaching Sunday school, church activities, and was an officer of the Lutheran Child and Family Services Auxiliary.  She also participated in Bible Study Fellowship as a group member and group leader.  Vernice was employed by the New Palestine kindergarten and worked as secretary at Doe Creek Middle School. Vernice was a bookkeeper for her and Bart’s own business, Bart’s Brake Technicians, and they retired together in 2000.  As a farm girl, she enjoyed showing Guernsey cows in 4-H.  She and Bart liked to square dance, and she sewed, gardened, and loved crossword puzzles.  Vernice had a heart for older people and spent much of her time caring for her parents, in-laws and other aging family members when they needed extra help. Vernice is survived by her sons Scot (Donna) and Kent (Angie); grandchildren Megan (Drew) Carrico, Sarah (Chris) Shaw, Katie (Brandon) Fields, Grant (Hannah), Jenni, and her great-grandchildren Lucus, Elizabeth, Howie, Nora, Maeve and Arlen. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church, 6513 W. 300 S, New Palestine, IN 46163.

Funeral Service will be on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 12:00pm at Zion Lutheran Church, 6513 West 300 South, New Palestine, Indiana, 46163 with Pastor Taylor Officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30am until time of service at the church. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, New Palestine, IN.
