Steven Dean Schwein

Steven Dean Schwein passed away peacefully and surrounded by love in his Indianapolis, Indiana home on August 28, 2026 at the age of 64.

He was born in Seymour, Indiana to parents Richard Dean Schwein and Ann Lynn (nee Smith) Schwein. He graduated from Seymour High School in 1980 where he was a member of the tennis team. He attended Indiana University and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.

He headed to California for a change of pace and while commuting to work on public transportation, he met Evelyn. Their friendship grew and they married a year later and celebrated their 40th anniversary this year. They later moved back to Indiana to raise their family.

He was employed in the graphic arts as a typesetter and continued in this field until the loss of his vision to steroid induced glaucoma. He attended Bosma Rehabilitation Center where he learned to walk with a cane, read braille, and use other adaptive techniques. After completing this program, he volunteered as a braille tutor to assist other adults who were learning to adapt to their vision challenges. Progressive Multiple Sclerosis was diagnosed and added to his challenges.

He was a spiritual man and a Reiki master. He wrote poetry, played acoustic guitar, and loved listening to many genres of music, but especially anything by Neil Young. Following local sports teams was a passion and like any good Hoosier, basketball was his favorite – collegiate teams and of course, The Pacers. He loved reading books about history and archaeology as well as novels. He was difficult to beat in a game of Yahtzee, and always brought humor and wit to each day. He was a husband, father, and friend who will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his wife and devoted caregiver, Evelyn (nee Briggs) Schwein; his son, Phillip Schwein; his daughter, Lauren Schwein; his daughter, Allison Schwein; his son, David Gurecki; his sister Lori Robinson (Ty); his sister, Kathy Rieckers (Ron); and his sister Sally Wicks (Brad).

His ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony at the Crown Hill Cemetery Scattering Garden in a forested area reminiscent of the forested area where he and Evelyn were married.
