Ronnie Howard

Ronnie Howard, a beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, distinguished veteran, mentor, and cherished friend, passed away on August 10, 2026, in Greenwood, Indiana, at the age of 84. Born on November 30, 1941, in La Porte, Indiana, Ronnie’s life was one marked by unwavering dedication to family, community, and country.

Ronnie’s legacy is carried on by his devoted wife, Nancy Meadows; his family, Randy (Victoria) Howard and Rhonda (Thor) Peterson; as well as his treasured grandchildren, Christopher, Katelyn, Andrew, Cole, Madison, and Jack; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.  Their lives were guided and encouraged by Ronnie’s constant presence, steadfast support, and joyful participation in their daily lives. Ronnie delighted in every moment he shared with his grandchildren. He created cherished memories camping at Jellystone Park at Lake Monroe, taking trips to the zoo and children’s museum, and never missing a ball game. He celebrated every birthday and holiday with them, especially Christmas, when he would light up their faces by dressing as Santa. Lovingly known as “Papaw,” his attentive presence and deep affection helped shape countless precious family traditions and memories.

Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents Grover Cleveland and Edna Mae Howard, his loving wife Theada Mae Howard, his sisters Vivian (Howard) Sloan and Lida Joe Howard, and his brothers Billy, Charley, Bobbie, Garland, and Junior Howard. Though they have departed, their lives remain interwoven with Ronnie’s through shared memories and a lasting bond.

Serving his country with honor and courage, Ronnie was a proud Marine Corps combat veteran during the Vietnam War, earning two Purple Hearts for his bravery. He was a true hero in every sense. Prior to his service in the Marine Corps, he served in the Army. After his service in Vietnam, Ronnie continued to serve in the National Guard, exemplifying his enduring commitment to our nation and to his fellow servicemen and women.

In July of 1967, Ronnie began a remarkable 37-year career at Ford Motor Company. His dedication and strong work ethic were evident throughout his years of service.

Beyond his career and military service, Ronnie enriched the lives of countless young people by volunteering as a coach with his son Randy's youth baseball and basketball teams. He generously gave his time as a role model, mentor, and Scout trip volunteer. His presence, guidance, and kindness left a lasting impression on many families.

Ronnie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid IU Basketball fan, especially admiring Coach Bobby Knight. He loved golf and fishing. He took many fishing trips to Florida and enjoyed the calm and beauty of Lake Cherokee in South Carolina. Music brought him peace and happiness, especially country western and bluegrass, with a particular fondness for Ricky Skaggs and Johnny Cash.

Ronnie loved to celebrate every moment with family and friends. His enthusiasm for the holidays, especially Christmas, Thanksgiving, and birthdays, made every occasion brighter. He was a cornerstone of family gatherings, often the one leading the laughter and bringing everyone together.

Throughout his life, Ronnie Howard embodied devotion, resilience, and generosity. He had an immeasurable impact on his family, friends, and country. He will be greatly missed by all.

Visitation to honor Ronnie’s life will be held on August 15, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Bell Mortuary & Crematory, Shangrila Chapel, located at 1444 US-52, Fountaintown, Indiana. A Funeral Service will be held at the same location from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, after which Ronnie will be laid to rest at New Palestine Cemetery, 5055 500W, New Palestine, Indiana.
