Robert G. Hanvey, Jr., passed away Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Hospice in Bloomington, peacefully and surrounded by his family.
Bob, called "Red" by his parents and sisters for his boyish red hair, was born in Chicago on September 11, 1925 to Etta and Robert G. Hanvey, Sr. He had many happy memories of growing up in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood and of his adventures in Cuba at age 11 with his Aunt Hazel, whom he referred to as his "Auntie Mame."
After serving in the U.S. Army in Korea, Bob graduated from the University of Chicago. He became a writer and educator who taught at the University of Chicago Laboratory School and was later known for his work in the field of global education. He won particular acclaim for his influential paper "An Attainable Global Perspective."
Bob loved sailing. He owned and sailed boats on Lake Michigan, the Santa Barbara Channel, San Francisco Bay, and Lake Monroe. Bob also loved flying small planes and gliders, having attained his pilot's license as a young man. He was a talented visual artist, photographer, poet and storyteller. His children and grandchildren were especially fond of his bedtime stories about spaceman, "Captain Boo-Boo."
Bob was a kind, funny, and gentle soul as well as a loving and beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hanvey, his sisters Nancy Hanvey and Sally Taylor, his children Michael (Jill) Hanvey, Katy Willard, and Doug Hanvey, his grandchildren Jacob (Christina) and David (Jen) Willard and Caitlin and Meg Hanvey, his great-grandchildren Jeff Ziegler and Laura and Molly Willard, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, parents, aunts Hazel and Jean, and first wife, Patricia Anne Hanvey.
A memorial service to which friends are invited will be held at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, October 27, 2012, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 2120 N. Fee Lane, Bloomington.
Memorial donations may be made to IU Health Hospice in Bloomington.
