Robert "Bob" Eugene Szalay went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 29, 2025 in New Palestine, IN. He was born in Winding Gulf, WV on August 1, 1939 to Richard and Theresa (Molnar) Szalay, who preceded him in death. He was a devoted husband for 54 years to the love of his life, Carolyn R. (O'Connor) Szalay, who preceded him in death. He was a loving father to R. Scott Szalay (Kurt) and Theresa R. (Szalay) Vester (Bruce). His greatest role in life was being a PaPa to his eight grandchildren, Olivia (Vester) Jones (Spencer) and Cameron Vester, Mariah, Matthew, Zoey, Dianna, Isaac, and Skylar Szalay.
As a veteran of the U.S. Air force, he served his country with honor and integrity for four years. He retired as a Police Officer from the Indianapolis Police Department after 32 years, where he received the Medal of Valor for bravely serving his community.
After his retirement, he served as a Federal Marshall for the Indiana Federal Courts for five years.
He enjoyed woodworking, traveling to all 50 states, going to church, and loving on his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was always there to support his family and friends. He was a hard worker, a man of great integrity and a true role model for his children and grandchildren. He loved to make everyone feel welcome and to make them laugh. His kindness, generosity and unwavering love for his family and friends will never be forgotten. He will truly be missed.
Service will be on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at 1:00pm at Bell Mortuary & Crematory, Shangrila Chapel, 1444 West US Hwy 52, Fountaintown, IN 46130 with Andy Folger Officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00am until time of the service at the mortuary. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Greenfield, IN.
