Nancy Elizabeth Johnson

Nancy Elizabeth Johnson (nee Graham), 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her husband, Larry Edmond Johnson, and by her sister Harriett, brother Richard, brothers-in law Charles, David, Norbert and sister-in-law Diane. She is survived by her children Pamela (Maureen), Victoria (Jeff), Rebecca (Tim), Andrew (Chris); her grandchildren: Ben, Madeleine, Tyler, Tess, Lucas, Sadie, Olivia, Claire, Gabe; her great grandchildren: Kali, Nolan, Nora Jane, Zaiden, Kolson and Callum; and by her sisters-in-law Nancy, Shirley and Sharon and brother-in-law Steve.

Nancy was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana to Dorris Chester (DC) Graham and Louise Fischer Graham. Her early years were marked by WWII. Her father served in the Army followed by the Indiana National Guard and moved the family to Mississippi then back to Indiana. They eventually resettled in Crawfordsville, and he became a math teacher and her mother became a librarian.

Nancy graduated from Crawfordsville High School, attended Cottey College and then Indiana University in Bloomington where she met Larry. They married and settled down in Indianapolis where they raised four children. Nancy was involved in her church and began a lifelong engagement with civic and community activity.

She rejoined the workforce once her children were in school starting as a switchboard operator at Railroadmen’s Savings and Loan Company and eventually rising to the position of Branch Manager. She and Larry got the sailing bug on a trip to the Bahamas and took up sailing and racing Hobie Cats and became active members of the Eagle Creek Sailing Club.

After retirement and Larry’s death, Nancy moved to Hendricks County and enjoyed traveling the world with friends and family.

In Hendricks County, she started a second career in municipal politics and ran successfully for Hendricks County Councillor serving for two terms. She was especially proud of her work developing Hendricks County parks and the Hendricks County Historical Museum. She was also active in the Avon Rotary Club and PEO.

She spent her last years at Westside Garden Plaza and made many friends. She remarked to her children that she felt lucky that she was able to live such a full life and said she will leave with no regrets.
