Lois Irene (Taber) Baker

May 8, 1940 — December 21, 2023

Indianapolis

Lois Irene (Taber) Baker, 83, died Thursday night, December 21, 2023, following extended decline due to Alzheimer’s disease. A resident of Indianapolis, she was being cared for at Cherished Memories, Cumberland Trace, Plainfield, Indiana.

Lois was born at Yaloké, Oubangui-Chari, French Equatorial Africa (now the Central African Republic) on May 8, 1940. She lived there until she was seventeen. Her father, Dr. Floyd W. Taber, was a missionary doctor and her mother, Mrs. Ada Delores Taber, was a missionary educator.

At age seventeen, Lois relocated to Winona Lake, Indiana, to complete the final two years of high school. She graduated from Bryan College, Dayton, Tennessee, in 1963. Lois taught high school French and English for several years and graduated from Purdue University with an MS in Education in 1984. But throughout her adult life, Lois worked primarily as a copyeditor and proofreader, helping to prepare books, magazines, journals, and study guides for publication. For several years she drafted language exercises for a distance education curriculum.

A lifelong follower of Jesus the Christ, she was deeply versed in the Bible and actively engaged in the congregational life of churches she and her family attended as they moved from place to place, including serving as deaconess. The role she found most fulfilling, however, was that of teaching junior high Sunday school students.

Besides her parents, Lois Baker was predeceased by her brothers and her sister: Charles R. Taber, Marguerite Taber Spearman, and Allan B. Taber. She is survived by her husband, Dwight P. Baker, Indianapolis; her sons and daughter-in-law, Karl W. Baker and Evelyn Kung Baker, Altadena, CA; Doug P. Baker, Gosport, IN; by her six granddaughters; and by seven great grandchildren.

Friends are invited to join the family for Lois’s funeral service to be held at the Community Church of Greenwood, 1477 W. Main St., Greenwood, IN, at 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 14, 2024. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until time of service.

Following a private committal service, Lois’s ashes will be interred with her parents in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, Indiana.

Peace to her memory.
