John P Petrunich , 96, passed away peacefully on May 3 2025. He was born in East Chicago on May 25 1928.
John was a proud Marine of twenty-two and a half years serving in WWII, The Korean War, and Vietnam War. During his time of service he was highly devoted earning him numerous awards of recognition including a Purple Heart, Navy Unit Citation, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct medal with three gold stars, Korea Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two stars , and a Vietnamese Service Medal.
John was a very simple man who loved his Chicago Cubs, family, numbers, card games and bowling. He never knew a stranger and would help anyone in time of need, no questions asked. He was often the life of the party with his dance moves and zest for life. He brightened your day with his smile and outlook on life. Often called papa, John loved his family and is survived by his daughters Andra(Stan) Ignas, Donna(Randy) Birchfield, Carolyn Palka, Cindy(John) Mrozinski, 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was a very special man who was just shy of his 97th birthday and loved dearly by his family. He will be missed dearly.
He is proceeded in death by parents, John & Anna Petrunich; wife, Frances Petrunich; brothers, Andrew, George and Michael Petrunich and son in law, Joseph Palka.
A church service will be held in his honor on Saturday May 17th at 10am. The service is held at St. Michael’s Church 3354 W 30th Street.
