Greenfield

James Donald Wheeler, 82, known lovingly as Don to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2026, in Greenfield, Indiana, with his family by his side. Born on August 15, 1943, in Dunbar, Kentucky, Don spent a long and fulfilling life marked by hard work, devotion to loved ones, and an unshakeable sense of integrity.

Don's early years took root in Kentucky, but it was in Indiana where he shaped much of his future. He attended New Palestine High School, laying the foundation for the values and friendships that would shape his life ahead. Answering the call to serve his country, he joined the Air Force, an experience that remained a source of pride throughout his years.

After his service, Don pursued a career that would become both his livelihood and his passion. As the Owner and Operator of Don Wheeler Trucking, he built a business founded on dedication, honesty, and a reputation for reliability. His work ethic was matched only by his humility and genuine warmth toward each person he met along the way.

To those who knew Don, it was clear that his love for family stood at the center of his world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Wheeler; his son, Jeff ( Nicole) Wheeler; his daughter, Michelle (Jim) Marsh; and his sister, Diane Hunter. He also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Don’s steady presence and kind heart created lasting memories for every generation.

He is welcomed in rest by his father, Lawrence Wheeler; his mother, Wanda Wheeler; and his step-son, Jeff Haste, who preceded him in death.

Don filled his days with more than work; he found great enjoyment in NASCAR, basketball, golf, and RVing. Each pursuit reflected his lighthearted spirit, competitive edge, and desire for adventure—traits equally present whether he was gathering with family, sharing stories at gatherings, or traveling the open road.

The impact Don had on his family, friends, and community is immeasurable. He quietly inspired those around him to work hard, love stronger, and to make the most of every day. His legacy is one of unwavering commitment to his family, a strong work ethic, and a zest for life. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who were fortunate to know him.

Friends and family are invited to honor Don’s memory at the visitation on Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Bell Mortuary & Crematory, Shangrila Chapel, 1444 US-52, Fountaintown, IN 46130.
