HARVEY E. KNOX (“Poppy”) Former City-County Councilman

Harvey E. Knox, 80, passed away February 18 at his residence. He was born September 15, 1931 in Indianapolis. Knox was proceeded in death by parents, Edward and Nellie (Purcell) Knox; wife, Delores Jackie Knox; son, Jerry Knox; daughter, Sheila Tarpley; granddaughter, Neely Knox; great granddaughter, Kaylee Knox Elmore. Survivors include sons and daughter-in-laws, Ron and Joan, Jeff and Anita, Darrell, and Jim and Cathy Knox; daughters, Janet White, Angela Laux, Melanie Knox and Rebecca (Knox) Smith and husband, John Smith; sisters, Erva Webb and Roberta Smith; brothers, Herschell and Kenneth Knox. Knox has 37 grandchildren or great grandchildren, and was declared as Mayor of Stringtown because of his leadership in the community.

Knox was founder and owner of Knox Septic Service, Stringtown Neighborhood Association Council, and the Stringtown Community Center for Youth. He also was a member of UAW local 135, Masonic Lodge, and served as Councilman for Indianapolis-Marion County Council from 1999-2003.  As Councilman Knox represented the Westside and was instrumental in advocating for many improved services including utility improvements.

Friends may visit Monday and Tuesday, February 20 and 21,  from 11 am to 11 pm at his home, 226 N. Reisner Street. Services will take place Wednesday, February 22 at 1:00 pm with calling starting at noon at the Westside Apostolic Church, 1540 West Ohio Street. Burial will follow at Floral Park Cemetery.
