New Palestine

Leland "Gene" Eugene Seaton, known fondly as Gene, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, at the age of 98 in New Palestine, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on November 26, 1927 in Milltown, Indiana, Gene was a man whose life spanned nearly a century of extraordinary change, and he approached each chapter with steadfast character and quiet dignity.

Gene was immensely proud of his deep roots in Crawford County, where his ancestors settled in 1814, making him the sixth generation in his family to call that land home. His early years were shaped by the strong bonds of community and family, values which remained the compass of his long life. He graduated from Leavenworth High School as a member of the class of 1945, a milestone particularly memorable as he was one of only two graduates that year.

Following high school, Gene answered the call to service and joined the United States Army, where he served as a medic during the Korean Conflict. His dedication to duty and care for others marked his military years, and he carried this sense of responsibility and compassion throughout his life.

After his honorable service, Gene built a long and respected career as a Payroll Accountant at Allison's, a Division of General Motors. Known for his reliability and attention to detail, he earned the trust and admiration of his colleagues until his retirement.

Outside of his professional and military accomplishments, Gene found joy and fulfillment close to home. He was a man of simple pleasures: listening to music—especially Old Gospel, Big Band, and Instrumental tunes—completing crossword puzzles, and reading. He took particular pride in maintaining a beautiful yard, mowing his grass daily, planting trees, and caring for shrubs. These daily rituals were more than hobbies; they were expressions of his diligence and love for the home and heritage that meant so much to him.

Gene is survived by his devoted wife, Margie Seaton, who stood by his side in good times and in trials. He leaves behind his cherished children: Brad Seaton, Sandy Bardes and her husband Jim Bardes, Peggy McGuffey, and Susan Seaton and her husband Dave Mansfield. He is also survived by his sister, Arrah-Wannah Thomas, each of whom will hold dear the memories of Gene’s steadfast love and guiding presence.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Eugene Seaton; his brothers, Glenn Seaton and J Royden Seaton; and his parents, Basil and Sarah Seaton. Their memory remained with Gene throughout his days, and their influence could be seen in the quiet integrity with which he led his life.

Family and friends are invited to honor Gene’s life and legacy at a visitation on July 21, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at New Palestine United Methodist Church, located at 3565 South 500 West, New Palestine, IN 46163. A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Anthony Stone will follow at the church at 1:00 p.m., with burial to take place at New Palestine Cemetery, 5055 500 West, New Palestine, IN 46163.
